Overview
As a camp counselor for our Adventure and Language camp in Thailand, teaching English during day camps will provide many children with an opportunity to learn a valuable skill that can improve their lives.
Becoming a language camp counselor in Thailand is not only highly rewarding, but it’s also a lot of fun. In Thailand, The Cultural Exchange Project's language camps provide English language education to disadvantaged youth. This allows them to learn an essential skill that they can use to better their lives. These language camps mostly take place in and around schools. Students are offered a chance to practice their English through a more creative set of activities and learning experiences that make the day a lot more enjoyable.
During camp days, you will participate in various creative activities that incorporate art and music with the children. You will also have time for plenty of exercise by playing soccer during activity time. It’s the Thai kids’ favorite sport.
Fees
- $1,850 for the 4-week program.
- $2,550 for the 8-week program.
- We pay a weekly "thank you" stipend of approximately $25. (750THB)

Included
The fee you pay to volunteer in Thailand goes to our 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, The Cultural Exchange Project Foundation. The program donation for this experience covers:- An online preparatory course on how to tailor lesson plans towards English camps, and how to use the current basic curriculum.
- Genuine Thai cultural experiences, away from the tourist traps.
- Cultural orientation and foundation, presented by knowledgeable and experienced experts in the fields of culture, politics, and language.
- Accommodation is provided. Participants are required to pay a refundable security deposit. The deposit will be refunded minus utilities. (Shared accommodations).
- Airport pickup in Bangkok and transfer to a Bangkok hotel (provided that the applicant lands within 4 days of the start of the cultural orientation)
- Welcome beach party with all of your classmates following the completion of cultural orientation.
- Meals during camp days.
- Counselors will have the opportunity to help disadvantaged Thai youth acquire a vital skill: speaking English.
- Accommodations are provided on a double-occupancy basis. Counselors will be placed with another counselor of the same gender. Counselors are responsible for paying electricity and water charges.
- Counselors receive transportation and accommodation when traveling and conducting camps in different regions.
- Receive a weekly stipend of approximately $25.

- International insurance with 24-hour emergency assistance services for US permanent residents. (Available at an additional cost).
In the past, during orientation, we included:
- In-depth lectures on Thai history, politics, religion, and geography.
- Thai language lessons.
- Several active learning cultural excursions to places and organizations of cultural and educational importance including:
- Muay Thai martial arts training
- A guided tour of a Buddhist temple and a blessing from a Thai monk
- Volunteering with a dog rescue organization
- Visiting an elephant foundation
- Learning about (and taking part in) classical Thai arts and crafts
- Celebrating at a fun beach barbecue, we arrange for all participants, an excellent opportunity to bond with your new friends.

Dependents and Pets
It is possible for friends, spouses & partners to come together. Dependents may be able to come but would not be able to join the program so a spouse or friend would need to care for the dependent while the parent is on program. No pets allowed.

Language and Citizenship Requirements

Participants should have at least a B2 level of English. -

Types of Camps
English camps come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Depending on the size of the school, age and proficiency of the students and the needs of the schools, camps typically run in 1 of 3 ways:
1. Classroom camps
Classroom camps are the most common type of camp. These are typically held in schools with students
of different ages. Students are taught in their classroom, participating in a single session of English
language based around fun, interesting, and educational activities. Counselors may be required to
team-teach during the camps, with more than one counselor per classroom.
2. Mass production camps
Mass production camps are held with large groups of students all completing the same task, either in
groups or individually. These camps usually occur when there are a lot of students, but few Adventure
Camps. During mass production camps, counselors prepare camp activities that allow students to
complete fun, educational tasks. Throughout the camp, counselors will run large activities for the group
as a whole, work their way around the group, and ensure students are on task/completing activities.
3. Focus station camps
Focus stations are camps where large groups of
students are split into smaller groups to complete
different tasks, activities or games with a single
Adventure Camp. Stations can be split up into 1
hour, 30 minutes, 15 minute or 10 minute
sessions. Once a session is complete, the group
will then rotate to another station to complete a
new task. Each station will offer students
something different, whether it’s a different topic,
language skill or concept. -
Other Program Activities
See local sites before or after camp days. Optional weekend activities based on availability, temple cave, waterfalls, and an elephant national park tour. These trips are arranged for you, but the cost is your responsibility.

Accommodation
Stay at a shared apartment during the orientation week and downtime. Stay at hotels and motels during camp days.
Housing During Program - Accommodation is provided. It is in an apartment building. It is double room occupancy.
Private room is available at 10,000 baht. Utilities not included. Accommodation in hotels and guest houses is provided when at camps.
Health Insurance - purchase travel insurance that covers you for the duration of your time in Thailand. -

Working Hours
Rolling basis through the week. Each week will look different. Most camps take place during the week and run from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Typically 3-5 days of actual camp teaching per week with additional prep time and two days off per week consecutively.

Total camp size can range from 20 students to hundreds of students.

Visa Support
Tourist Visa or Visa Exemption
Arrive on a tourist visa or visa exemption. The in-country team will confirm. Visa type will depend on nationality, program length, and intake date. We require that participants wait to confirm the visa type. We will confirm and send you a visa guide 1-2 months prior to the intake. -
Orientation & Airport Pickup

Group pick up on the Sunday prior to the intake date.

All flights must arrive by 12:00 PM (noon) on the Sunday prior to the intake date. Later flight arrivals may need to make their own way to orientation, or we can help arrange a private pick up at the participant's cost.

Pick ups are normally spread out and arranged between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM on the Sunday. A designated pick up time will be sent to each participant around a week in advance

If a participant misses their airport pickup, they can either make their own way to the orientation site or we can help arrange a private pickup at your expense.

Private pick up costs: 1,800 Baht (sedan style car), 2,000 Baht (SUV style car), 2,500 (van).

60-Hour Online TEFL Certificate Included
Online Thailand Cultural Foundation Course (20 hours) is included before you depart: It is a short course we call Culture Course "Lite" for Thailand. It covers culture, living and working and safety.
60-Hour Online TESOL Course: Interactive course covering how to create lesson plans, plan activities, etc. This is included before your arrival.
One Week Culture, Language Orientation once you arrive in Thailand: In-class one week culture and language program upon arrival in country, including:
Temple visit and meditation
Visit to an animal rescue park
Muay Thai class
Cooking class
Market tour
Beach welcome dinner
Classroom sessions on diversity in the local context
