TEFL Certified and Still Job Hunting? Here's the Real Difference

You got the certificate in June. It's the middle of August now, and the folder where you keep job leads has three items. Two of them are emails you sent yourself as reminders.

Nobody told you, going in, that "TEFL certified" and "teaching abroad" were two different finish lines. The certificate was supposed to be the hard part. Turns out the hard part was what came after — a list of job boards, a login to a placement portal, and a sentence that sounded like a promise at the time: we'll help you find something.

The Sentence That Does a Lot of Quiet Work

"Placement assistance" and "guaranteed placement" are used almost interchangeably in TEFL marketing. They are not the same thing.

Placement assistance means access — a job board, an alumni network, a recommendation letter, maybe an introduction. It's real help. It is also not a job. You're still the one applying, interviewing, and getting told the position is filled by someone with more classroom hours than you.

Guaranteed placement means CEP places you in a specific, paid teaching position at a specific school before you leave. Not a lead. A placement.

What Happened at CIEE

We wrote about this back in June: CIEE, a serious and long-running nonprofit in this field since 1947, is retiring its Teach Abroad program line beginning in 2027, and it stopped taking new TEFL certification enrollments in June of this year. If you got certified somewhere else this summer because your usual option had already started winding down, this is likely why.

That's not a knock on the certificate you earned. It's a reason to look closely at what happens after you earn one.

What "Guaranteed" Actually Means at CEP

CEP places teachers in salaried positions in six countries — Cambodia, Costa Rica, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam — for a full academic year, a semester, or a summer term. The placement is set before you fly. That's the whole difference between a program built around access and a program built around an outcome.

If You're Already TEFL Certified Somewhere Else

You don't need to start over. CEP's TEFL Plus program offers a clear path for people seeking certification. But if you already hold a certification — show us your certificate, and we'll get you on your way.
