TEFL Plus vs. Standalone TEFL: What August Applicants Need to Decide

You have a fall departure in mind and a certification you haven't started yet. That's the actual position most people are in when they email us this time of year, and it's not really a question about which TEFL is "better." It's a question about how much of the job hunt you want to run yourself, with the calendar already moving.

Two Certificates, Two Very Different Autumns

A standalone TEFL certification does one job. You take the course, you get the certificate, and then the search starts — cold emails to schools, waiting on replies, negotiating a contract, sorting a visa, all of it yours to run, on your own clock.

TEFL Plus does that same job and one more. Certification and placement move together, so you're not finishing a course in September and starting a job search from zero in October, hoping a school in your target country responds before your window closes.

Neither one is wrong. They just carry very different amounts of work after the certificate lands in your inbox.

A Flight With Connections, Booked Two Ways

Picture two ways to book the same trip. Standalone TEFL gets you the first leg — you land in "certified," and now you're standing in the terminal booking every leg after that yourself. A slow-to-respond school. A visa document nobody warned you about. One missed connection, and the whole trip slides a season.

TEFL Plus books the itinerary as one ticket. Certification and placement land together, on one timeline, with one team accountable if a connection runs late.

For someone hoping to be in a classroom by fall, that's the whole decision, right there.

What You're Actually Weighing in August

If you already have a school, a country, a connection lined up, standalone TEFL is enough. You know where you're landing. You just need the credential.

If you don't, and August is already half gone, TEFL Plus removes the open question from your timeline instead of adding a second project on top of the coursework. That's most of the people writing to us right now with a fall date circled and nothing placed yet.

Where This Sits Against Other Programs

Programs like ITA offer standalone TEFL certification, and it's solid on its own terms. CEP's TEFL Plus isn't trying to replace that. It's a different bet, for a different person — someone who wants the certificate and the classroom decided together, run by a nonprofit that's handled this exact placement for decades, rather than as two separate transactions with two separate parties.

Neither is the correct TEFL. One is right if you're building the itinerary yourself. The other is right if you want it built for you, on a calendar with no room for a missed connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between TEFL Plus and a standalone TEFL certification? A standalone TEFL certification qualifies you to teach English abroad but leaves the job search entirely up to you afterward. TEFL Plus bundles the certification with a guided placement process, so certification and classroom placement move on the same timeline instead of two separate ones.

Is TEFL Plus more expensive than a standalone TEFL course? TEFL Plus typically costs more upfront than certification alone, because it includes placement support and program guidance, not just coursework. Whether that's worth it depends on how much time you'd otherwise spend running the job search yourself.

Can I still choose my own school or country with TEFL Plus? Yes, within the countries and programs CEP places in. TEFL Plus doesn't take away your input on placement — it takes the burden of finding, vetting, and negotiating with a school off your plate.

I'm applying in August for a fall start — is that too late for either option? Not necessarily, but the margin is thinner with a standalone certification, since the job search still happens after the coursework wraps. TEFL Plus is built for exactly this kind of compressed timeline, since placement moves alongside certification instead of after it.

How do I know if I need placement help or if I can find a school myself? If you already have a school, country, or personal connection lined up, standalone TEFL may be all you need. If you're starting from "I want to teach abroad" with nothing placed yet and a fall deadline closing in, TEFL Plus takes that open question off your plate.

The Cultural Exchange Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has placed native English speakers in paid teaching positions abroad for decades. Programs in Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Costa Rica, Cambodia, Spain, and Vietnam.
