Graduation was in May. It is now the last week of October, and the plan you made for yourself in June has softened around the edges. Maybe you took a job to cover rent. Maybe you're back in your old bedroom, and your parents ask over dinner what comes next.

And somewhere in the back of your mind is Korea.

If you want to teach in a Korean public school starting in March 2027, the application deadline is December 1, 2026. That is 36 days from today. Five weeks and a day. What the December 1 deadline covers

Korean public schools start their school year in March, and they hire the way Korean trains run. On time. On schedule. The doors close when the clock says they close.

The December 1 date applies to the public school track. These are ALT positions in government schools, where you teach alongside a Korean co-teacher in classes of 25 to 30. You work 8:30 to 4:30, Monday through Friday, with weekends and public holidays off and 21 to 26 paid vacation days a year. Public schools run two intakes. March 2027 closes December 1, 2026. September 2027 closes June 1, 2027.

Private language academies, called hagwons, work on a different timetable. They hire year-round, and you can apply now and start within three to four months. So if December 1 passes, Korea is still on the table. The March public school train is not.

36 days is enough, but only if you start this week

December 1 is the application deadline. The documents come after, and they take longer than the application.

Korea asks for a degree apostille, a background check, health forms, and passport photos. Our program page estimates the whole process at four to six months from sign-up to arrival and names the most common reason people miss a Korea intake: starting the documents too late. From December 1 to the first week of March is about three months.

You can see the math. Applying on November 30 is allowed. Applying this week is smarter.

We send you a complete checklist and work through every item with you. Nothing gets missed. But the checklist starts when you apply.

What waits on the other side

Korea is selective, and it pays for that.

The salary runs from $1,600 to $1,900 a month. Your housing is rent-free and semi-furnished, with a bed, a fridge, air conditioning, and a washing machine. Flights are reimbursed up to $1,000, and public school teachers also get their return flight covered. Your school pays half of your Korean National Health Insurance. After you complete your 12-month contract, you receive roughly one month's salary as severance. Korean law requires it.

Income tax for teachers runs 4 to 7 percent, and US citizens in public schools can claim a two-year exemption with a residency certificate. With $0 in rent and about $20 a day in living costs on a basic budget, saving $400 to $1,000 a month is within reach.

You will need some money to get there. Our page puts it at about $1,250 to carry a placement teacher through to the first paycheck. For the full picture across every country we run, What Teach-Abroad Costs Upfront in 2026-27 lays it out line by line.

If you graduated this year

You need a bachelor's degree in hand, from a university in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa. If you walked across the stage in May, you have it. That diploma is the first document on the list, so it is worth finding this week.

You also need a 120-hour TEFL certificate. CEP bundles TEFL Plus, our 120-hour internationally accredited course, into the Korea program, and you can try the first three modules free before you decide.

The fear I hear most from recent graduates is about the year. Twelve months sounds long when the last four went by in a blink. What if the school is wrong for you? What if you are homesick by February?

Your placement is guaranteed and confirmed before you board the plane. You arrive having finished a Korean language course, and an orientation weekend follows in your first months. Seoul ranks as the 8th safest city in the world. If a problem at your school is outside your control, we work to fix it; if we can't, we find you a new position.

Twelve months. Renewable, if you love it.

If the March train left without you, would you feel relief, or would you be standing on the platform wishing you had bought the ticket in October?

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the deadline to teach in South Korea in March 2027?

The application deadline for CEP's March 2027 public school intake in South Korea is December 1, 2026. Public schools also run a September 2027 intake, with applications due by June 1, 2027. Private language academies (hagwons) hire year-round with no fixed deadline.

Can I teach in South Korea right after college?

Yes, if you have your bachelor's degree. Korea requires a completed bachelor's degree from a university in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa, plus a 120-hour TEFL certificate. Applicants still waiting to graduate face a longer timeline because Korea requires a degree as one of the documents.

How much do English teachers earn in South Korea?

CEP teachers in South Korea earn $1,600 to $1,900 a month, with rent-free housing and flights reimbursed up to $1,000. Income tax runs 4 to 7 percent, and teachers who complete a 12-month contract receive a severance payment of roughly one month's salary. With low living costs, you can save $400 to $1,000 a month.

How long does it take to get to Korea to teach?

Plan on four to six months from sign-up to arrival in South Korea. Most of that time goes to collecting documents such as a degree apostille, a background check, and health forms. CEP sends a complete checklist and guides you through each step, but starting early is the best way to avoid missing an intake.

What if I miss the December 1 deadline for Korea?

You can still teach in South Korea through a private language academy (hagwon), which hires year-round, with start dates three to four months after you apply. The next public school intake is September 2027, with applications due June 1, 2027. CEP also places paid teachers in Thailand, Japan, Costa Rica, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

The Cultural Exchange Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has placed native English speakers in paid teaching positions abroad for decades. It runs programs in Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Costa Rica, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
