• How do we choose host families?

  Families reach out to us because they have a genuine desire to open their homes and provide a warm and welcoming environment for an English speaker who can help them improve their conversational English skills. When there are children in the family, they often require assistance with their English homework, and sometimes even the adults are eager to participate as well.

  Families who are interested in hosting an English tutor are carefully evaluated. They must demonstrate a genuine need and desire for an English tutor, and undergo a thorough screening process. This includes a background check, an interview by our experienced in-country staff, a home inspection, as well as providing photos of their home (both inside and out). While tutors are guaranteed their own private room, there may be occasions when the bathroom is shared. Families graciously provide meals, except when tutors are traveling or not at home.

  We carefully consider every match we make because we understand the importance of finding the right host family for you. While it is not possible to change your host family based on location, we have emergency families in place to assist if any issues arise. Rest assured, this is an extremely rare occurrence and we are always here to support you.

• Can I choose my location?

  To truly immerse yourself in the authentic experience of living abroad, you won't have the option to choose your exact location. However, fret not! Simply let us know the area you prefer and whether you'd like a bustling city, a charming town, or a tranquil rural setting, and we'll do our best to accommodate your preferences.

  Timing is crucial when it comes to being chosen by host families in need of a live-in tutor. Don't worry if you haven't considered certain locations before applying, as they might turn out to be fantastic places in your country of choice. In fact, we can even share stories of many tutors who absolutely loved their assigned locations!

• What is the application process like?

  1. Submit the online application along with the $350, non-refundable deposit. This amount comes off your program fee.
  2. You'll receive a link for a supplemental form and additional materials to submit.
  3. When we receive all of your docs, we begin to match you with a screened host family.
  4. We'll email you the host family information.
  5. Set up a (Zoom, WhatsApp or Skype) call with the host family for your interview.
  6. Once you and the host family agree that it's a good match, you and the family arrange the exact arrival and departure date together.
  7. Now you'll pay your final payment of $649. There is nothing more you have to pay us.
  8. Find and purchase your flights on the airline of your choice.
  9. Arrange your international travel & health insurance.
  10. If you need a visa, please arrange for your visa at this time. US Citizens do not need a visa for this program.
  11. Fly overseas and begin your Homestay Tutor program and cultural experience!

• More Frequently Asked Questions

  Do I need to get a visa?

  For most homestay tutors, you'll enter the country on a tourist visa and you can stay 90 days. If you have concerns, check with the embassy of your destination.

  When can I book my flights?

  Hold off on booking your flights until you've been matched with your host family. They'll discuss various arrival dates with you, and we'll let you know when it's the right time to secure your airfare.

  How long can I stay on the program?

  For this program, participants are allowed to stay a maximum of 90 days. After that, it is necessary to leave the entire Schengen Zone (all of the EU) for a period of 180 days before returning to any EU country.

  If you are considering traveling inside the EU either before or after your time as a tutor, we recommend not accepting a 3-month position. It may not allow you enough time to explore and travel before or after your program.

  Also, don't surprise your host family. They might not be able to host you past the agreed-upon dates.

  Do I need to speak the local language?
  
  Nope! Although if you arrive with a little knowledge of the local language, it is going to be a little easier for you.

  Do I have to have the classes prepared in advance?

  Remember, your host family wants to learn conversational English. Most of what you have to do is just speak as you normally would.

  Our own tutoring book with lesson plans and games is provided to you before you depart.

  I've heard bringing a gift for the host family is a good thing.

  Who can resist a thoughtful gift? We suggest bringing a little piece of home with you. Maple syrup, pancake mix, or a coffee mug are just a few delightful ideas.

  Do I have free time?

  We are asking you to tutor the family 15 hours a week. Outside of that commitment, you're free to explore. In fact, we hope you will!

  Will my host family speak English?
  
  Count on them to know basic English. That's why you're there!

  Can I be placed with a travel companion?
  
  Most host families can accommodate only one tutor. However, if you wish to travel with a companion, we will do our best to find a second family who would also like a tutor and who lives near your host family. This way, you can spend time together a few times during the week.

  This is something you want to mention right from the start. Think of it as a puzzle. We can put it together, but it might take a little time.

  How long does it take to be placed with a family?

  If you can give us 90 days, we will succeed in an awesome placement. Some tutors want a last-minute placement. We charge extra for that. The longer we have to make the match, the better program you're going to have.

  What can I do in my free time?

  Outside of the 15 hours a week, the time is really yours to do what you like.
